WHAT WE DO
At Fundación Cerro Guido Conservation we are concerned with conserving the territory's heritage, encompassing two main areas of action: first, the conservation of natural heritage, and second, the preservation of cultural heritage. These two categories are subdivided into areas where we are taking different actions,

Objective: Conservation of biodiversity and promotion of coexistence between human activity and species.
Objective: Make visible and make available the paleontological deposits of the territory.
Objective: Make the geological space available to facilitate research and the dissemination and enhancement of the geographic-geological heritage of Cerro Guido.
Objective: Preserve and value the architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries, in addition to strengthening the local architectural identity of the territory.
Objective: Make archaeological sites and goods available, as well as facilitate research and knowledge regarding archaeological issues.
Objective: To rescue and value customs and traditions.
FOCUS AND AREAS OF ACTION
NATURAL HERITAGE
Cerro Guido stands out for its rich biodiversity and geography characteristic of Patagonia. This environment includes steppes, mountains, and rivers that are home to emblematic species such as the puma (Puma concolor), the guanaco (Lama guanicoe), and the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus), all of which are essential to the trophic chain and the ecological balance of the region.

In addition to its biodiversity and geography, Cerro Guido is an area of great paleontological significance, with dinosaur fossil discoveries that reveal the geological history of the region and its importance in the study of the evolution of life on Earth.

The extreme climate, characterized by strong winds and drastic temperature variations, has shaped a resilient ecosystem in which both wildlife and human activities—especially livestock farming—have developed over centuries.
The Cerro Guido Conservation Foundation is dedicated to preserving this natural heritage through scientific research, species monitoring, and the implementation of conservation practices that promote harmonious coexistence between wildlife and human communities.
The cultural heritage of the region is deeply linked to the history of livestock farming and Patagonian rural life. The figure of the baqueano—a traditional herder and guide of the region—embodies an extensive knowledge of the land and a constant relationship with nature. The customs and traditions of these inhabitants, which have endured for generations, reflect a unique way of life that should be honored.

Livestock farming, as a key cultural activity of these communities, has been both a source of economic livelihood and a defining element of regional identity. However, it has also given rise to challenges, such as conflicts with wildlife species, particularly the puma and the guanaco.
In addition, Cerro Guido contains significant archaeological remains that bear witness to the presence of Indigenous peoples who inhabited these lands long before European colonization. These sites offer a window into the past, showing how early communities interacted with the natural environment.

Local architecture, mainly found in livestock estancias, is another key element of the region’s cultural heritage. Traditional buildings, designed to withstand extreme climatic conditions, stand as testimony to the ingenuity and adaptability of communities living in the harsh Patagonian environment.
The Cerro Guido Conservation Foundation collaborates in the preservation of these structures, keeping local history alive.
CULTURAL HERITAGE
PROJECTS
PUMA PROJECT
Modelo de Coexistencia:
Estrategias para prevención del conflicto

Objetivos:
(i) Estudiar mecanismos para evitar el acercamiento de carnívoros a lugares no deseados y evaluar su efectividad en los distintos campos.
(ii) Continuar la crianza de perros raza Pastor de Montaña de los Pirineos y Maremma, para integrarse a los rebaños como protectores y disuasores de predadores de ganado doméstico.
(iii) Desarrollar capacidades y ampliar las formas de trabajar la ganadería, incorporando paulatinamente un enfoque holístico.
(iv) Establecer modelo de Coexistencia entre la Ganaderia y la Fauna Silvestre el cual pueda ser replicable en otras estancias y territorios.
HUEMUL PROJECT
Proyecto Huemul​​​​​​

Objetivos:
(i) Se estableció un sistema de monitoreo para evaluar la presencia de huemules en el territorio del Complejo Torres del Paine, priorizando registros indirectos y observaciones ocasionales.
​
(ii) Se diseñaron estrategias para maximizar la probabilidad de detección de huemules (y otras especies de interés), con el fin de estudiar su presencia, comportamiento y capacidad de adaptación frente a transformaciones del ecosistema.
​
(iii) Se busca generar información que permita evaluar, en el futuro, la pertinencia de una eventual reintroducción de huemules mediante la creación de un centro de rescate y rehabilitación para esta especie en peligro.
WILDLIFE MONITORING AND RESEARCH
Monitoreo e investigación de Fauna Silvestre

Objetivos:​
(i) Monitorear y evaluar la presencia de pumas y otras especies en el territorio de la Estancia Cerro Guido y Complejo Torres del Paine, a través de avistamientos directos e indirectos.
(ii) Maximizar la probabilidad de obtener registros de pumas (y otras especies) para realizar estudios sobre su comportamiento, adaptabilidad frente a cambios de su ecosistema, relacionamiento interespecífico, entre otros.
(iii) Elaborar/Colaborar en la elaboración de publicaciones científicas para revistas nacionales e internacionales.
(iv) Generar conocimientos valiosos para tomar desiciones basadas en la evidencia y alcanzar una coexistencia armonica entre los actores del territorio.
PALEONTOLOGY AND GEOLOGY
Paleontolgía y Geología en Cerro Guido

Objetivo:
Visibilizar y poner a disposición de la comunidad científica los yacimientos paleontológicos del territorio, para facilitar su investigación, difusión y valorización.
​
Actividades realizadas:
(i) Expediciones científicas para realizar estudios geológicos y paleontológicos.
(ii) Levantamiento estratigráfico de la zona.
(iii) Prospección y reconocimiento in situ de material fosilífero.
(iv) Extracción de fósiles.

SCIENTIFIC OUTREACH AND EDUCATION

Divulgación científica y educación
Objetivos:
(i) Promovemos una comprensión profunda de la biodiversidad y la coexistencia en la Patagonia mediante actividades educativas en terreno, abiertas a la comunidad local, visitantes y estudiantes. Estas instancias buscan sembrar curiosidad, respeto y vínculo con el entorno.
​
(ii) Fomentamos la participación activa del público en procesos científicos, invitando a ser parte de jornadas de monitoreo de fauna, talleres y safaris de conservación. Así, fortalecemos el lazo entre la ciencia y la sociedad, haciendo del conocimiento una experiencia compartida.
​
(iii) Generamos y difundimos contenidos científicos accesibles y rigurosos, capaces de inspirar una participación informada y comprometida con la conservación del territorio. Creemos que divulgar es también conservar: al acercar la ciencia, abrimos camino al cambio.
ARCHEOLOGY
