Este pequeño felino, de entre 80 y 100 cm de largo, entre 2.5 y 8 kg de peso y aspecto similar al de un gato doméstico, es uno de los tres felinos posibles de encontrar en Patagonia. Tiene un pelaje color grisáceo y salpicado de manchas negras que hacia las extremidades se vuelven más alargadas y en la cola forman anillos. En esta especie existen casos de melanismo, en los que el pelaje es completamente negro.
The Geoffroy cat; this small feline, between 80 and 100cm long, between 2.5 and 8 kg in weight and similar in appearance to a domestic cat, is one of the three possible felines to find in Patagonia. It has a grayish coat dotted with black spots that become more elongated towards the extremities and form rings on the tail. In this species there are cases of melanism, in which the coat is completely black.
Se distribuye en el sureste de Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, casi la totalidad de Argentina y Chile, en donde se le puede encontrar entre la región de Aysén y la de Magallanes, además de la cordillera de la región de la AraucanÃa.
It is distributed in the southeast of Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, almost all of Argentina and Chile, where it can be found between the Aysén and Magallanes regions, as well as the mountain range of the AraucanÃa region.
Es un animal solitario, de hábitos crepusculares a nocturnos y se alimentan de pequeños roedores, liebres, conejos y aves. Prefiere zonas cubiertas de bosque y matorral, pero también es posible de avistar en sectores más abiertos de roquedal y matorrales bajos.
It is a solitary animal, with twilight to nocturnal habits and they feed on small rodents, hares, rabbits and birds. It prefers areas covered with forest and scrub, but it is also possible to spot them in more open areas of rocky ground and low scrub.
